What is it?
Orthognathic surgery is a surgical procedure performed to correct disharmonies in the bone structure of the face. These irregularities can cause bite problems, chewing difficulties, diction difficulties, improper breathing, sleep apnoea, improper posture and associated pain, as well as facial aesthetic imbalances and disharmonies.
Orthognathic surgery is performed in conjunction with orthodontic treatment, where the orthodontist adjusts the position of the teeth before surgery and during the recovery period after surgery. Together, the orthodontist and orthognathic surgeon work to achieve a harmonious and functional facial and dental result.
The procedure involves surgical cuts in the jawbone and/or maxilla, which are repositioned according to prior planning carried out using imaging tests such as X-rays and CT scans. The surgery is performed under general anaesthetic in a hospital environment.
After surgery, patients usually need a recovery period of a few weeks, during which facial swelling and discomfort can occur. There is usually no pain. During this period, eating is restricted to soft foods to ensure a proper recovery.
