Hair Care in Summer

Is there really a need for special hair care in summer?

The long-awaited season has arrived, bringing the promise of sun, warmth and, of course, well-deserved rest. However, this isn't the most favourable season for our hair, which suffers the impact of various aggressive agents. In fact, most of the time, it's only after the summer is over that we end up seeing the result of all the damage that has been accumulated during the hot months: a dehydrated hair, weakened, from faded colour e dull.

It's therefore best to learn how to identify the main risks your hair faces and what you can do to protect it. Taking a preventative approach, rather than acting belatedly by seeking treatment to solve a problem that has already been created, will certainly make all the difference.

Summer: the main "enemies" of hair

We all have a protective layer of hair, the cuticle, which incorporates a lipid layer. And the elements we look for most in summer are precisely those that can damage this protective layer the most:

  •  Exposure to the sun (UV rays) - excess solar radiation will dry out the hair.
  • Sea water - sea water is an aggressor for hair, as the salt tends to weaken it, making it more brittle.
  • The water in swimming pools - Much more than seawater, the chlorine present in swimming pools has a very harmful effect. If we think of hair as a protein structure, we can easily see that chlorine tends to break down this structure. As a result, you'll notice brittle hair very soon.

Hair care

So, in order to protect our hair from the action of all these elements, it's important to take basic care of it:

  • Avoid peak UV exposure;
  • Use hair care products with a high UV protection factor;
  • Protecting your hair with a hat, cap, scarf or even a towel;
  • Rinse hair with running waterafter swimming in the sea or pool;
  • Picking up your hair on the top of the head to avoid contact with salt water or chlorine;
  • Wear a swimming capto prevent chlorine from directly attacking the hair structure.

Don't forget that moisturising and food also influence hair health. Thus, good moisturisation and a rich and varied diet will contribute to its vitality.

Keep your scalp moisturised and protected. With the right care and a focus on prevention, it's possible to minimise the damage caused during the hot season. If possible, consult a specialist in hair medicine who can give you the best advice for your hair type.
