Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a manual technique of gentle movements and slow cadence that aims to stimulate the lymphatic system so that lymph is reabsorbed more quickly by the lymph nodes.

With DLM we can speed up tissue healing, reduce pain, reduce the inflammatory process and increase the resorption of haematomas and bruising. In this way, patients enjoy a better quality of life during the post-operative recovery period.

The duration of each session will depend on the surgery or set of surgeries performed. If, for example, it's a breast augmentation, it will last 30 minutes; if it's a combined surgery, such as abdominoplasty and liposuction, it will be 60 minutes (therapeutic ultrasound is used together).

It's not a painful technique; on the contrary, it's very relaxing for the patient and they feel a general sense of well-being at the end of each session.

Modelling massage

Modelling massage is a massage technique for aesthetic purposes. It is performed with vigorous movements and tension. It is therefore a completely different procedure to DLM, but is often mistakenly confused.

With Modelling Massage we can reshape body shapes, improve venous and lymphatic circulation, improve the appearance of the skin, reduce cellulite and consequently reduce body measurements.

The duration of each session is 30 minutes, and the frequency and number of sessions are subjective, depending on the individual assessment from case to case.

This massage technique can be a little uncomfortable in the first few sessions, but tolerance improves with each session. Each person's sensitivity is also a determining factor.

As far as results are concerned, improvements can be seen from the first session, but effective results take time and depend on the initial stage, the type of cellulite, the care the person takes in terms of diet, fluid intake and physical exercise.
It should always be seen as a complement to a healthy lifestyle.

Action of lymphatic drainage (manual and mechanical)

During surgery, tissues detach and blood vessels and cells rupture, leading to an excessive accumulation of fluids. Lymphatic drainage will help to reabsorb this excess fluid, and this reabsorption will take place at the level of the blood and lymph capillaries.

Lymphatic system filters excess fluids -> Forming lymph -> Lymph is released into the bloodstream -> Forming blood plasma -> Toxins are eliminated by the excretory organs

In this way, DLM contributes to:

  • accelerate healing, making recovery time shorter;
  • reducing pain;
  • reduction of the inflammatory process;
  • increased local oxygenation;
  • resorption of haematomas and bruises;
  • improves and accelerates the return of sensitivity;
  • potent anti-inflammatory action.

Indications for both techniques (DLM and Pressotherapy): Recovery after surgery (pressotherapy in the later post-operative phase) and improvement of lymphatic circulation in pregnant women (pressotherapy only with the approval of the obstetrician).

DLM in pregnant women can start as early as 3 months, but they usually do it towards the end of pregnancy, because that's when they feel the most need for it.

Benefits of Ultrasound Therapy

  • Anti-inflammatory action - inhibits tissue inflammation;
  • Promotes and accelerates tissue healing and regeneration;
  • Prevents formation and reduces fibrosis;
  • Prevents the formation of seromas;
  • Improves blood and lymph circulation;
  • Analgesic action - reduces pain;
  • Promotes angiogenesis - the formation of new vessels;
  • Reduction of haematomas and bruising;
  • Increases tissue elasticity;
  • Increases the action of fibroblasts, improving the appearance of the scar.

Myths and truths about skin cleansing

Skin cleansing eliminates all acne lesions.
Myth. Not all acne lesions can be manipulated at the risk of causing a mark/scar at the site of the lesion.

After cleansing, the face is often red and sore.
True. As Deep Cleansing involves the extraction of comedones, blackheads and milliums, the skin is a little irritated and sensitive, with a great tendency to be red and sore after the technique. Sensitivity is expected to normalise after 1 to 2 days.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women cannot have their skin cleansed.
Myth. Pregnant and breastfeeding women can have their skin cleansed, but the products will be suitable for their condition. It's important to leave out dermo-cosmetics containing alcohol and other irritating active ingredients, such as acids.

Young people can have this procedure.
True. Skin cleansing can be done at any time of life, but it's important to start treatment as early as puberty. This way we can control the oiliness of the skin and the appearance of acne from an early age.

Rhinoplasty Post-Operative Massage

Post-operative Rhinoplasty care consists of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), not only in the operated area but also throughout the face and neck.

With this technique we can speed up tissue healing, reduce pain, reduce the inflammatory process, increase the resorption of haematomas and bruising and prevent the appearance of fibrosis.

Three sessions are recommended, starting as soon as the doctor authorises them (usually on the 3rd post-operative day). Of the 3 sessions, 2 are carried out while the splint is still on and the last is carried out on the day the splint, adhesives and stitches are removed, so that drainage can be carried out directly into the nose. In this last session, the patient is also taught a manual massage technique that should be carried out at home and which promotes long-term recovery.

Each session will last 30 minutes.

It's not a painful technique; on the contrary, it's very relaxing for the patient and they will feel a general sense of well-being at the end of each session.
