But what is a follicular unit anyway?
The follicular unit is a natural grouping of different anatomical structures with various physiological functions, located in the dermis, from which a variable number of hairs emerge (from 1 to 5 or more) - the so-called "hair density per follicle" or "ratio", which varies with gender, age and ethnicity.
This follicular unit is extracted from the donor areas (posterior and lateral regions of the scalp) and implanted in bald areas or areas with reduced hair density, whether on the scalp, eyebrow or beard.
Recent advances in surgical technique, with the FUE ("Follicular Unit Extraction") technique and knowledge of follicle physiology have led to a marked reduction in follicular damage and better results, with a more appropriate and "natural" aesthetic.
The most common approach is for the hair to be shaved along the entire length of the scalp (donor and recipient area), remaining at a maximum length of 1mm, with advantages for the surgery: greater speed, less discomfort during surgery and even greater precision in the extraction and implantation, while not interfering with the success of the surgery and the growth of the implanted hair.
- But it's not imperative, and if the patient has conditions and restrictions regarding the haircut, it's possible:
restrict the cut to the donor area only;
- Make the cuts in the donor area in small strips (in cases of mild/moderate baldness or patients with long hair, such as women).
However, there may be some discomfort and pressure on the scalp during surgery.
